I am Peter Blaker, I present the Solitary Writer’s radio show.
I work as a specialist teacher providing learning services for adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities. I worked in special schools for three decades, and now have my own business.
A while back, I started an initiative to tackle loneliness in our local area. The idea was to find an interest people might be following in isolation, and provide a place where they can come together with others who share their enthusiasm.
Writing seemed the most obvious choice, and so Solitary Writers was started. Not all the people who come are isolated, but those that are can find friendship and support from like-minded people.
We are supported by Wellington Quakers, so we meet in their meeting house once a month. Instead of a subscription, we all bring a small donation of food for the food bank.
We recently celebrated the fourth birthday of the group.
The radio show is the next step forward, a place to air the message of inclusivity and care for each other, and to celebrate local writing in all its forms…
I feel this is a hugely exciting venture, and so far we have presented a wide variety of prose, poetry, therapeutic stories, ‘talking head’ monologues and journalism. We have had fascinating guests who have shared their insights into their own work, and writing in general.

Mindline – a friendly, anonymous and non-judgmental listening service for people feeling isolated or distressed. Also available to those concerned about a friend, relative or neighbour experiencing mental distress.
