10Radio, the community radio station for the 10 Parish area surrounding Wiveliscombe and Milverton, has been awarded £5000 by Awards for All, the Lottery grant givers.
The money will help pay for studio costs, licensing, training and volunteer costs.
Julian Mellor, one of the station organisers, said
“
This money will really help us make sure that 10Radio is a great success.
We’re
getting massive support from local people and organisations and the
Awards for All grant will help ensure that we can get all the licences
and equipment
we need to get on air throughout September”.
10Radio is being
strongly supported by Kingsmead School. Ben Elkins, Head of Religious
Education and Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education,
said
“
10Radio is a unique project that will bring students from the school and
people from the local community together. The students are really excited
about the
project and have already started making programmes about life in the
local area.“
Kim Cavanagh from 10Radio added
“
There are lots of opportunities for people to get involved in 10Radio.
People are already putting forward some great ideas for both music and
talk shows.
We have started to train local people in the skills to make programmes
and broadcast on air and will help everyone get involved in whatever way
they can”.
Julian Mellor also said:
“
Lots of the pieces of the jigsaw are falling into place, but we’re
still short of some of the funding we need and are still searching for
a suitable
studio in Wiveliscombe. We’ll be very grateful for any more
support and help”.
10Radio is being set up and will be run by residents of the 10 Parish area. It is entirely voluntary and not-for-profit. A public meeting in April was attended by 50 local people all of whom want to get involved in making programmes and helping 10Radio to happen.
10Radio will broadcast through September 2005 and will coincide with the 10 Parish Arts Festival covering Ashbrittle, Bathealton, Brompton Ralph, Chipstable, Clatworthy, Fitzhead, Huish Champflower, Milverton, Stawley and Wiveliscombe.
A waveband will be allocated by Offcom in the summer. 10Radio will also be broadcasting on the internet - www.10radio.org
Kingsmead School is teaching students to make programmes, interview and edit. Their programmes will be broadcast in September and students will also host their own radio shows.
Other funding has been approved by: Jim Laker Fund, the Local Strategic Partnership and Kingsmead School.
