closeFriday 22nd March 2024 with Pauline Homeshaw and Julie Elkins Repeats Monday 4pm, Tuesday 10am and Wednesday 5am 9 – 11am THE COMMUNITY SHOW with Pauline Homeshaw and Julie Elkins Repeats Monday 4pm, Tuesday 10am and Wednesday 5am 9 “What’s in a Name” Tony Painter explains how our villages and towns got their names. Tony, a member of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, explores the background of the names we take for granted but perhaps don’t know where they came from! 9.30 Wiveliscombe Town Councillor Peter Berman updates listeners on matters concerning our local area. 10 John Burgess presents “Somerset People”. John was a journalist with BBC Radio and over the years he recorded people with fascinating stories to tell. This occasional series highlights some of those stories and this month we begin with a conversation about the Black and White Minstrel Show throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s with local man Ray Budd. 10.30 Whenever social media is in the news, it’s usually a story about the damage it’s doing to society. But of course social media can be a force for good - including for conservation and nature - and there’s an example right on our doorsteps. It’s a growing network of local bird and nature lovers on the messaging service WhatsApp. Anyone can join the Wivey Birds WhatsApp group. It’s not just for members to share their latest sightings of birds in and around Wiveliscombe. Members are also engaging in conservation projects in the area. 10Radio’s Andrew Luck-Baker pulled on his wellingtons and joined four fellow members of the group at one of Wiveliscombe’s nature hotspots. (First broadcast in November 2023)
